The Dominican Theological Library (DTL) began as the faculty library of the Dominican House of Studies at Somerset, Ohio, in 1834.

Since 1834
It was moved to Washington, D.C., with the establishment of the current House of Studies in 1905. Our faculty became a Pontifical Faculty of Theology in 1941, and is also civilly accredited. A new wing for the Faculty and Library was dedicated in 2009. The DTL holds over 50,000 volumes in its circulating collection, as well as over 15,000 titles in its specialized Reference, Dominican, Thesis, and Rare Books collections. We also receive many scholarly journals. The DTL is a member of the Washington Theological Consortium.
Technology and Catalog
Today many libraries are better described as information centers or media centers. While the DTL employs some new information technologies and new media, it remains, above all, a traditional library: a place for books and for the rigorous acquisition of learning.
All our collections, services, and facilities are meant to foster serious and recollected study in the service of the Gospel.

About the Collections
The Dominican Theological Library houses an extensive collection of theological and philosophical works. Shaped by its Dominican identity, the collection is especially strong in the scholastic tradition, particularly in the works of Saint Thomas Aquinas and his commentators. The Library possesses nearly all of Aquinas’ published works, including the critical editions distributed by the Leonine Commission. Many valuable Thomistic commentaries, such as those of Cajetan, are also available within the Library.
The Library subscribes to two hundred current periodicals and journals, covering topics in theology, philosophy, literature, and history. Back issues from over four hundred journals are available, either as bound volumes or on microform. The Library also owns rare books, incunabula, and manuscripts.
The Dominican Theological Library is continually expanding its collection to provide its Dominican residents and the students of the PFIC with the wide variety of resources necessary for their research.
Periodically the library creates a new mini exhibition showcasing various books centered around a specific theme. The exhibit can be found in the display cases on the main floor, to the right of the recent periodicals.
